Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins

Catching Fire is very definitely a middle-of-a-trilogy book. Hunger Games could stand alone, but Catching Fire is meant to lead into the final book, and that makes it a little difficult to review. Still, I wanted to write the review before I got too deep into Mockingjay because I wanted to review it for itself, even if the review is short.

I actually liked Catching Fire better than I liked Hunger Games. I didn't expect this, partly because long before I even considered reading Hunger Games a friend of mine blogged about how she loved Hunger Games but really didn't care much at all for Catching Fire. But when I read it myself, I liked that the characters were more fleshed out, that world itself took on more character, and that the stakes were bigger.

And although it took some time for me to process the end (if you've read the book you might understand why), once I did process it, I liked what it said about Katniss and her role in the events leading up to it and her perception of her role in the events. It shifted my perspective a little, and I liked that it shifted my perspective. It made the story feel more complex.

All in all I thought it was well-written, well-crafted, and interesting, and now I feel like I can jump on board with the Hunger Games trilogy.

I read Hunger Games on Kelsey's recommendation (since you weren't sold on it) and loved it. Then I read Catching Fire and loved it too. But I hated Mockingjay. I'm interested to see what you think.

These books were like twilight (and I like twilight) in the sense that the more I read the less i liked the main character. I really love Petra and wasn't sold on Gale as a character even after the third book. I hope you like mokingjay. It is predictable until it isn't.
